"Tournament of Champions" Recap
This weekend recap was supposed to be the Tournament of Champions. Well, as many of you may know that was canceled due to bad weather in Houston. That being said many people were upset about it. That, however, did not stop these teams from playing. Many of them still played each other. With the exception of NW Florida and Chipola being over in Florida every team was close to the rest.
Two teams took big hits this weekend.
Chipola went 2-2 for the weekend losing one game to unranked State College of Florida and the other to #18 Wallace-Dothan (11 inning game), both games were decided by just 1 run. There two wins for the weekend were over St. Pete and #12 Palm Beach. In the game against Palm Beach Chase Forester came out of the pen and was lights out. Going 5 innings striking out 2 while only giving up 1 hit. This weekend dropped them in the rankings down to #5.
Odessa beat Grayson to open up the weekend but that was all that happened. Splitting the series with Grayson then losing 2 to North Central Texas had them at 1-3 for the weekend dropping them 4 spots to #18. (Funny thing about this is even though they did not play the same schedule this weekend as originally thought they still took the hit like was said in the Preview).
Two teams that had great weekends. Even though they both had a loss.
Howard started off the season with a 1 run loss to Navarro but then came back in a big way in game two; winning 7-0 with the starting pitcher Chandler Coates (Arkansas State Commit) going 6 scoreless innings with 8 K’s. In their third game of the weekend, they played McLennan and took home that wins. They went 2-1 for the weekend and to start off the season.
San Jac the new #1 was 3-1 for the weekend. Splitting their games with #4 McLennan. Then taking both games from Navarro.
Even without the Tournament of Champions, there was still great baseball across the state and country that was played by these teams.
